April Emails Post #2

Another day more emails. I am motivated and as long as I have one computer to use for a little while, I plan on doing some work emptying and sorting. I did notice that the last few nights, I have been unable to sleep well. Last night it was because I had grilled out again and someone else was burning and the smell kept me awake. I may need a nap to get through the day and stay up to work on other things competently, but we will see what the day brings.

I forgot that I had saved some other little things to my FB page, as well. The one I am most interested in is the Famous Book for every US State. I own some of these books already, but I think that next year, I might try to read all those books (even borrowing from our local libraries). I will see if I can get the girls to read them, too.

I found a great article that shows how knitting and/or crochet help girls with math.

I also discovered a place where I can track books I read, a little more than others...It is called BookLites.

I also have parks that are in Ohio and that are considered under-appreciated. I love taking the girls to parks to explore and see what we can learn. I have an expedition to plan! I also found where a city in Ohio has a "Potterfest" every year. That sounds like so much fun! It is near the Kent State University. This year they are going to have a 5K "Run Like You Stole From Gringotts."

Also, I am not a big drinker of alcoholic drinks, but every now and then I stumble across one that I would love to try....Bunny Shots in one.

Another Week Finished

Another week has gone by and I haven't looked at this blog, only at my mom's recipe blog. I added some more recipes to her blog. Friday, is grocery shopping day and since the Lebanon Kroger has become so bad at keeping items stocked, I will have to go to another store. This means shopping at more than one place. This makes for a very long day. This week, I did start teaching my youngest how to purl. She has been practicing her knitting for awhile and finished a scarf and has been making blocks for an afghan that she wants to make for herself. I had bought several skeins of kitchen cotton from the store (big sale...97 cents vs 2 dollars). I explained to her that learning new techniques on dish cloths was a good way to go, because if you mess up on it, it won't matter, it will still clean the dishes. I have also been trying to read more, but that comes and goes according to what I have to get finished.

As we head into the middle of March, it seems strange to have Christmas items on the patterns list, but in truth anyone making gifts for Christmas actually starts collecting the patterns and making things back in January. I do know that my list has decreased a lot and I don't intend to add anyone to fill in the gaps, especially since one person put in print on her blog (that you can still find if you know how) that she hates what I make and throws it away as she walks out of the parents house. My mom won't be replaced, because there is no replacement, but she also didn't like the things I made, she stuffed them in the bottoms of boxes and backs of drawers. Instead, I will continue to make for my kids, my friends and husband. My mother-in-law loved getting things. I made her two prayer shawls, she would keep them on her all the time. When she passed, my sisters-in-law each took one, to remember her by.

Back to the Email

So, after taking a few days off from looking at the blog, the emails or too much else, time to get back to work. Today, I am starting at 2147! It is a good number, especially as this is about 500 less than where I started! I now have the goal of getting it below 2000 by the end of this week. I have also made 2 dishcloths, while I was off the computer. One was just a plain, use up the left over from the Halloween Cat dishcloth. It was a really pretty yarn and smelled so nice while I was using it. But you couldn't see the pattern. Have to remember that for future dishcloths. But right now, I had a friend give me some ends that she wanted used up. So that is what I will do and then I will give the final product to Dawn's Light. This is a great group of women who knit or crochet or sew. Things are made and given to people in need, through groups that the church supports.

1st Wednesday of January and the New Year

I am still working on cleaning out the email. On a positive note, it is moving along nicely and it is at 2180. I will work on it as much as I can today, but today is Wednesday and there are things to do and places to go. I had my thyroid removed because I had Grave's Disease (overactive thyroid production), they found Hashimoto's Disease (underactive thyroid production) and Cancer. I was lucky, I was very lucky. It was found small and had not spread, but I do have to take medication for the rest of my life and I have to have blood work (depending on the doctor) every 6 months (right now). So I went and had blood drawn and now I get wait for the results and then I can get my medication refilled. I am meeting up with a friend. She has been taking care of a colony of feral cats (dumped and terrified and not trusting humans). She buys food and feeds them. She captures and gets them fixed so that they don't continue to produce. Recently, some people dumped more cats into her colony. This is a major financial hardship on her and her family. So she started a Go-Fund Me Account to raise money to continue fixing, feeding and finding homes for the cats. She has even put up shelter for the cats to try and protect them from the weather (especially the cold). She is a good woman and, like me, she gets really upset with people dumping cats. I get them dumped in my back yard and the cats just need a little love and they end up making the best pet/fur baby. Pets are a forever, not an until. I get if an older person has an animal and then they die, not keeping it. But when you take in an animal, it is forever, not until you move, or until your boyfriend/girlfriend gives an ultimatum. I wish more people would get that. Also, today being Wednesday, is early release for the kids who go to a building. It is also Teen Club and I am playing chauffeur. But for me that means I get to wonder through the stacks and look at books or read or knit or crochet or something while they have their away from mom time and I have my away from kids time. I am grateful that the libraries near us have so many things to do and things for the kids to do to learn something new (like computer programming or 3D printers or book clubs just for them or even a safe place to come and enjoy).

Afghan - Crayon Colored

Bags - Chinese Waves - What is interesting to me is that purses (with long straps) tend to be a dump style back and when you start dumping stuff into your purse, it becomes harder to find things. Have you ever noticed how much stuff you put into your purse and how much we end up carrying daily (especially when you have children)? I noticed that the quantity went up. I carry first aid supplies, I carry a wallet and then there are the cards. Cards for libraries (in my case I have about 8 just for me and until recently, I carried cards for each of my children, too.

They took really good care of her, but she hung on longer than they thought and just as they were getting ready to send her back to the nursing home, she died. My mother was in hospice and passed within hours of being signed into it. My cousin spent the last days of his life at home, but cared for by hospice. If you can make one or many, why not give it a try. They do great work and the people who work in hospice have a hard job.
Toys - Little Black Owl

As I finished this post, it is now Thursday. My day started okay, we did a science experiment, using things I already had in the home. I love when it is bitterly cold as there are so many things we can experiment with and the kids love what they learn this way. But by 11 a.m. we have no water and we are abandoning the house and going to the library (so they can work on Rapberry Pi or Tinker Cad) and then to McDonald's for lunch (can't cook lunch without water) and then we will take a walk around a very pretty area. I am grateful we have so many things to do and places to go and things that we can do. I am grateful that I am able to keep my kids at home for schooling and that they love learning. I just want them to start picking up things on their own and not having to be directed to learning. I know this comes with time and it will happen. Oh, for anyone who wonders why we have no water....There is a water main break near our house and they have turned off all the water to our area. But they are fixing it and it will soon be back on, but for now, I will celebrate getting out of the house. Have a great day!

As for the emails, I have now reduced to 2157! Any progress is better than no progress. Later, I will put more of my mom's recipes into the blog that I started to hold her recipes.

4th of January, 1st day of School in the New Year

The New Year began on Friday, but we didn't start back to school until today. The news weather people kept up their harbinger of doom (snow, ice and cold) and I know some who were waiting for a delay of school or even a cancellation. But we homeschool and so there is not a cancellation. We started the day off at 9 a.m. with a discussion of science and scientific method and Pavlov's experiment with dogs. We discussed that even the cats can have a Pavlovian reaction. Then we did demonstrations of how even though I was not trying to create a Pavlov experiment or even experience for the animals, I have created one. Now the children have to read the books from the library that focus on scientific method and Pavlov. Love the library!

I have a friend who posted a challenge to her knitter/crocheter friends. I accepted the challenge. Knitting and crochet (and even cross stitch) are relaxing and enjoyable activities for me. Knowing that my family (meaning my siblings) do not appreciate or like many of the things that I created, I don't plan on creating things for them. But I will learn how to make things using new techniques. I will make things for my children and husband (who do enjoy what I make, wearing them proudly). I want to learn entrelac. I have watched videos and read some books and I think this will be the year that I will try to make them.

What I love about dishcloth patterns, is that they are all about the same square size and you can use them to make squares for afghans, so you could make an afghan out of the states (you would need to use the wayback machine to get these) and have a state afghan. I could make an afghan out of the states that I have visited in one color and another color for those I haven't visited and another for those I want to visit. The same goes for any dishcloth pattern.

What I love about Afghan patterns is that when they are large and cover you, they are perfect for winter work. As they grow, they cover you and keep you warm while you work. They also tend to repeat so at some point you will have the pattern memorized and can work anywhere in the house (yeah, you don't want to haul them around). But when summer comes, you need to switch to the squares. These can be hauled around and after you have made about 5 to 10 you will again have the pattern memorized. Afghans can be good as gifts and my family (my children and husband) love afghans. They spend a lot of time wrapped up in them. The cats and dog also like blankets. But you want to be careful what you make with the animals as their claws can get caught in some yarns.

More and More and More from the emails.

I had to delete some of the emails, because the links no longer worked. Not sure why they no longer worked, but that is okay. I think I got the links I wanted before they stopped. Christmas has come and gone. I had a good time with my in-laws. My nephew said he had a good time at our house again. My father-in-law's only complaint was there wasn't dessert, but he has been having trouble with falling and I worry that he hasn't been eating well, so I didn't have anything that would irritate his condition. But he did stay longer than usual. I think he had a good time.

New Year's is here and I am continuing to work on clearing out the email. The good thing is that I have removed enough that I don't get a nasty gram any longer, but I still have over 2200 emails. But the emails are slowly being removed and I am saving those pattern links that I really want to use.

28 December 2015

Still working on the Email

Yeah, I am still clearing out the email. I know that this is continuing, but there are really that many. I have patterns that I want to make for myself, my children, my husband, my nieces (from MD). My one sister says that she really likes the dishcloths that I made her and that due to use they need to be replaced. I guess I should get to work on that as Christmas is right around the corner. So many things to make and save. I am also working on my mom's recipe blog. My mom passed in August and there are recipes that we all want, so this way they are available to all of us. My brother wants a vegetable recipe, but I haven't found the one he wants yet, so I have to keep working on that. I also have 3 children who want to work on Tinkercad. It is a way for them to make something and then use a 3D printer to print what they made. But in order for the younger two to use it, I have to print a permission form and then send it back...yep, like that will happen. It is just easier to open one account (mine) and the let them work on it. We are fortunate that we have access to a 3D computer and there are people who can teach them how to use the different sites (safely) and print with the printer. They have learned how to write programs, also. Our library system is that good.

2 of my nieces have American Girl dolls and so patterns to make the dolls clothes are prime! I even have 1 niece who wants to knit so she can make things for her doll. I do love my nieces.

More from the Email

Yes, I am still working on cleaning out my email. I have been busy running the girls to their various activities and this means I spend a lot of time on the road and then when I am finished I have things that I have to do around the house. I am also making cookies for Christmas this year. I don't plan on giving any to certain people, and for the diabetic family, I will make some special sugar free cookies after Christmas. By then I should be able to get the items I need to make sugar - free cookies without using sugar or Splenda or things like that. I have noticed that our local Kroger has been out of items that I usually purchase and I have to go back more often than I would like. But I can handle it, but I didn't like the new manager's attitude that it was because of our location rather than order foul ups or low amounts available. I think I will be talking to the general manager and see what can be accomplished there instead. Let's start with the count (keeping in mind that it increases with new emails, but I am trying to clear those as they come in, rather than accumulating like I did with the old emails), it is 2360 (and it is Saturday). When posted (Wednesday), the count is 2314! Yay! I am slowly getting there! I also found some of my favorite designers, I remembered the pattern, but forgot their names.

I am saving this whole site, because she has so much on it that I have made and loved to make. RaAnn is very talented and I am grateful for her site Wicket Stitch Handcrafts.

Plarn. What is it? It is yarn made from plastic bags you get from stores. It is fun to make and makes pretty sturdy items, like mats for homeless or bags for groceries. You can google how to make it.

While I am remembering, if you click on a link that isn't working, go to The Way Back Machine. This site is phenomenal! You can get to the site as it used to look before it was canceled. You can see what used to be posted. Remember, everything posted to the net is always there! There are ways to get it back, but this is one of my all time favorites.
