Time Change Needs to End

I don't like Daylight Savings. When I was a teen, I loved Falling Back, but I didn't like Springing Forward. Then I grew up, I got married, I had children, and animals all my own. Children and animals do not make this change easily. In fact, while the rest of the world was enjoying the sleep in, my cats are stomping on me, my dog is at the top of the stairs, singing about being outside. It is still dark and today, it is dreary. I have been up since (what used to be 6:50 a.m.) 5:50 a.m. trying to convince the animals that they need to sleep a little longer. They aren't listening to me. They are hungry and thirsty (freshwater snobs) and, in the case of the dog, want to go out to use the restroom. It will take us almost a month to readjust to the fall back and then, just as we are comfortable with the change, it will be time to spring forward.

This was started during wars to help save energy and have more daylight during working hours, but now, these days, factories run around the clock and children are still standing out in the dark or in the case of younger children, coming home in the dark (some kids ride the bus for over an hour). It is time to stop the changing of the clocks.

Halloween Haunt

This weekend Kings Island started their Halloween Haunt and the girls and I went to see it for the very first time. It was so fun! The way it started and the running of the "monsters" was so priceless. The girls were able to get on rides with short to no wait times and they loved that. They rode what they wanted and we had some fun.

Yep, I said, Fire!

Last week we went to Virginia and stayed in a very nice hotel in Sterling, VA, who have very nice looking and very young looking (I must be getting old) firefighters. We were on the 5th floor of a 6 story hotel. Like I said, it was very nice. We stayed there for 3 nights and 4 days. They had a lovely pool and the employees were very sweet. On the morning of our last day, very early in the morning, the fire alarm sounded. It seems that a piece of bread caught on fire and this sounded all the alarms. Fire Department came out and turned off the alarms and we were able to go back to our rooms.

We learned many things on that "drill."

1. Keep slip on shoes near the door! You will need them as you walk down the stairs and into the parking lot.

2. If traveling with children, make sure they know where the car is parked and have that as the meeting area should you get separated, you can meet up.

3. Put a key card, a fully charged phone, car keys, all billfolds (wallets) into the purse and set it close to the door so that as you leave you are grabbing it (that way you can get into your car if it is a fire and cannot get back into the building). If it is a small fire easily contained you have a key card to get back into the building/room.

4. Study the evacuation plan. We knew where the stairs were and knew how to get out, but our girls did not and were headed for the longest route out and we had to direct them.

5. Be prepared to see people in sheets! Yep, my girls got a lesson in man and woman traveling alone will be doing other things in the bed.

6. Don't be surprised to hear people say that the next time a fire alarm goes off they are calling the desk! Yep, heard that one. Really folks think about this, if everyone calls down the phone system will be overloaded and if it was a bigger fire, you would be trapped!

After we were out of the hotel and learned it was just a toaster fire, I started laughing. Why? Because in Ohio, homeschooling, you have to have to fire plan in place and practice it. Do we have a plan? Yes. Have you practiced it? Yes. Did it work for the hotel? No! Why? Because the girls wanted to take the elevator, we had to yell for them to go to the stairs, no elevators allowed in a fire. We had to call them back to us when they started to the main area, rather than out the nearest doors to get out. Next hotel, we will be better prepared and we actually started by studying the fire evacuation form when we got to the room and then when we got to the next hotel (we were leaving that day and heading home after a last visit with family) and started our new plan. We were fortunate and I am glad that we learned something from this and can at least laugh at the absurdity of the fire drill at such a bad hour. Anything you can live through can be funny.

Cleaning off the Face Book Page

It has been awhile since I sat and cleared out my Facebook page, moving things I wanted to keep to my blog so I could find them later. It seems I haven't had much time to just sit and work on something, I have been making cakes to see which one my husband's brother might like for his birthday. (He liked cake A, not cake B which my husband and girls liked). So this weekend, the girls and I are making my brother-in-law his birthday cake for Monday.

Friday night, we had a nice storm buzz through. Last Friday, when the storm buzzed through, it caused a neighbor's tree to come down. On Monday, some of my great neighbors removed the tree for the other neighbor. I do have good neighbors and I am grateful for them.

The other problem that has been happening is that it is Contractor Season. They park across the street from my house and walk around the neighbourhood trying to sell. They ring my doorbell AND knock on my door. In one day, we had 5! I was irritated and not feeling well and my husband works third shift. I was so irritated that I wouldn't even talk with them. I also put a sign on my door not to ring the doorbell.

Birds invaded the dryer vent and died inside. We removed three! Yuck! So we got a new cover that should stop the birds entirely. So hopefully, we will get that up today.

I saw a pattern called Crochet Water balloons and decided I really wanted to make these as they are reusable, easy to "fill" (basically drop the completed water balloon in water and throw) and easy to clean up! I am going to make a few for my daughters and friends to play with.

My daughters love to go to Kings Island and I try to take them as often as I can. We went one night after my husband had left for work (we will start going earlier now that the school kids on buses won't be there as much and more things will be open).

I also was reminded of a funny recipe called Cat Poop Cookies that a friend shared and my girls got to try them at an event at the Washington-Centerville Libary. They said they were really good. So I think I will make them for fun one day.

52 Knit Slouchy Beanies
Gorse Shawl has a link for a pdf it is very pretty.

Stages of a Reader - Kind of fun, cartoony thing.

Christmas Countdown - Love this. It is a fun way to keep track and also if you make things for some special people it helps you know how much longer you have.

Kings Island

I recently took my girls to Kings Island for a few hours. We rode to the top of the Eiffel Tower Replica (1/3 the size of the real one in France) and enjoyed the view and the breeze. It was a hot day with lots of humidity. We then walked to the first ride they wanted to get on and tried to find a place to fill our drinks up at. This was where the problem started. They were few and far between and the lines were long (40 minutes long). The girls went and stood in line for a ride (1 1/2 hours) and I stood in line for the drinks. They were so thirsty when they got back to me that they drank their drinks very quickly, at which point I pointed out several things....1. 40 minutes to wait for refills, 2. the clouds were picking up and 3. if we stood in another 1 1/2 hour line for a ride we might be in the midst of a storm and not get to ride again. So we left and came home where we could get a drink (and many refills) while the storm lashed the house (the tree for our neighbor came down). I do enjoy the Eiffel Tower and love seeing the rides from the top of the tower. What is your favorite thing to do at Amusement Parks?

April Emails #4

Yeah, I know this is seeming monotonous. I was going to work on it Friday night, but we had a bad storm, and I don't use the computer during storms. Woke up on Saturday, to the storm repeat....the whole house shook and you could see the windows vibrate from the force of the thunder claps. Went to sleep and we had another storm during the night. Sunday has been overcast and the wind has been blowing, but otherwise nice. I was able to finish up many emails on another post, do laundry and a few other things. Now, I just want to work on a few more and get the emails for April off my Google account and maybe several from the Yahoo, too. What have you been working on?

April Emails #3

April has been so busy. Appointments, Easter and just doing things. Free time is at a premium. To top all that off, I bought a new lead (30 foot and 20 foot) and stake for my dog. I get her a new set every year so that hopefully she will not escape. I got them from Rural King, but they don't have any others for an even exchange. It only took 11 days for my 40-pound dog to destroy a stake meant for a 120-pound dog.
She is a strong dog. If you bought something like this, you might want to check yours and see if it is having the same issues.

I love to travel and explore and find things, so seeing Zoar Ohio listed as a place to visit interested me. I want to explore it, soon. There is also The Ohio Ice Cream Trail that sounds like a lot of fun to do, with kids, as well.
